Why do we talk about ”social networks” rather than ”support networks.” The reply to my question by one of the Vancouver mentors was very helpful. In my own words, if the circle of friends around the person at the centre is socially based, the network members are just that: friends. Not support workers. Their relationship with the person at the centre is not defined by their function or by the way in which they lend support. Rather, they step up to address needs as any friend would. As the friendship grows over time, as the network member increasingly experiences and is blessed by the friendship of the person at the centre, the friend often grows in involvement, as with any friendship. The support is there, but it’s the support a friend lends, not that of a specialist (though it may come out of some special area of interest as well).
